A Journey of Struggle, Legacy, and Transformation | Knowing Our Constitution

Celebrating 75 Years of the Indian Constitution: Reflecting on Our Legacy and Future

On the historic occasion of the 75th Constitution Day, the Justice Movement of India hosted a powerful and thought-provoking webinar titled “A Journey of Struggle, Legacy, and Transformation” on November 26th. The event was graced by the distinguished Prof. K. Purushottam Reddy, former Head of the Political Science Department at Osmania University, who shared his insightful perspectives on our Constitution’s enduring legacy and the path forward.

During the session, Prof. Reddy emphasized the need for critical amendments to the Indian Constitution’s preamble, advocating for the addition of sustainability and environmental justice to reflect the evolving needs of modern India. He proposed two key changes:

1️⃣ Updating “Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic” to “Sovereign Socialist Secular Sustainable Democratic Republic”, recognizing the urgent need to integrate sustainability into our national ethos.

2️⃣ Expanding the definition of justice from merely “social, economic, and political” to “social, economic, political, and environmental justice,” ensuring that our guiding document addresses the pressing ecological challenges of our time.

This discussion served as a reminder of the Constitution’s dynamic nature, its ability to adapt, and the responsibility of every citizen to safeguard its principles while ensuring its relevance to contemporary issues.

Let us continue to honour the legacy of our Constitution by striving towards a just, equitable, and sustainable India.
